A Gricker is a virtual guarantee that a sufficient amount of Co2 offsetting will actually place.

In a nutshell, when you buy a Gricker we will:

1. Check your preferences on how you want to distribute among providers
2. Buy Co2 offsets from the Co2 offset providers
3. Report out

At the moment only your Phone. We will be adding more items that you can Grick. If you want you can try to search for them and see if it will pop up.

Co2 is a gas that evenly spreads around the world. The number of Co2 particles in the world is more or less the same regardless which country you are in.

Therefore if you reduce Co2 emissions on one side of the planet this will be to the benefit of everywhere else on the planet.

In a nutshell: your annual usage of your smartphone. It excludes Co2 emissions coming from your phone network etc. (We may provide opportunity in the future to Grick that too).

We have detailed our methodology in this link.

About offsetting

Most frequent questions and answers

Offsetting means the reduction in Co2 happens somewhere else on the planet.

If you cannot reduce Co2 yourself, for instance because you take a flight, offsetting can help you ensure that overall the impact is carbon neutral. Yes your flight will emit X ton Co2 but on the other hand you buy a Gricker to ensure another X ton Co2 emissions are reduced somewhere else on the planet.

Many stakeholders are involved. To sum up a few:

Co2 is a gas that evenly spreads around the world, the same as air spreads around in a room. The number of Co2 particles in the world is more or less the same regardless which country you are in and this is why climate change is a global problem. Co2 gases dont stop at the border.

Therefore if you reduce Co2 emissions on one side of the planet this will be to the benefit of everywhere else on the planet.

Offsetting Co2 basically means you reduce Co2 somewhere else on the planet. For the planet that is good news as any reduction anywhere will have the same impact.

It is however important to understand that although offsetting is a (great) start, in the end we also need to reduce Co2 emissions ourselves.

Great question! There is a lot of material out there but we have summed up a few ones you may like:

We want to empower people, across the globe, to start reducing Co2. If many people will do so, it will make a difference and we can impact the future.

About Gricker

Most frequent questions and answers

To help people start their journey in reducing Co2.

At the moment, Martin Smit owns 100% of Gricker.

We are headquartered in Zug in Switzerland.

Yes, as far as we are aware. We use renewable energy for ourselves and our services and where we are not certain (or unable) we offset this by purchasing Co2 offsets.

Gricker is a social enterprise. Our primary goal is help to reduce Co2 emissions and to do that we need to get as many people doing this. To reach those many people, and grow, we need investments and to get investments we need to be able to show to potential investors that, somewhere down the road, we may make a profit. We do not anticipate to make a profit in the next 3 to 5 years and even if we do, most of those profits will go directly into Gricker to grow further.

Non-profits are great and we recommend everybody to contribute or participate in one. However, to grow fast and be able to reach out to as many people as possible to Co2 reduction we believe that the social enterprise model will better suit this then the the non-profit model.

We believe we will make no profit the next 3-5 years no profit; we probably will a make a loss. Any profit we may make we will be largely investing back to grow further: reach more people and reduce more Co2.

We will have our accounts audited by a independent & reputable auditor and we aim to publish a our financial summary each year.

We will spend at least 80% of what you spend on Grickers to purchase offsets from the various Co2 offset providers. The remainder is largely needed to cover the costs (creditcard transaction fees – about 5%, website maintenance, costs for legal advise, insurances, etc.). Since we are a social enterprise we do aim/hope to make a profit but if – or when – we do, we will reinvest almost all of that in allowing us to grow further and reach more people to reduce Co2. For the time being however it is unlikely we will make any profit, but we keep dreaming!

Yes, where required, we pay tax.

That’s easy: we have THE coolest name! But, we also differ in many aspects. The most important one is that we see Co2 Offsetting as a starting point in the journey to reduce Co2. Besides offering Grickers we aim to expand our offering to help you to reduce Co2 further.

In most cases you can indeed. You can visit their website for more information. We are all for free market! (but we also hope you keep using Grickers)

Spread the word to friends and family (or anybody you remotely know!).

Via email, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Weibo, Wechat, Snapchat, SMS, over dinner, you name it!

Recognition and endorsements from organizations and social influencers will also help a lot!
