Frequently Asked Questions

What happens when I Grick my phone?

Offsetting means the reduction in Co2 happens somewhere else on the planet.

Is my trial really for free? Who pays for the Co2 offsets?

If you cannot reduce Co2 yourself, for instance because you take a flight, offsetting can help you ensure that overall the impact is carbon neutral. Yes your flight will emit X ton Co2 but on the other hand you buy a Gricker to ensure another X ton Co2 emissions are reduced somewhere else on the planet.

What else do I need to do?

Offsetting means the reduction in Co2 happens somewhere else on the planet.

What happens at the end of the trial?

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur

About climate change

Why do we have climate change?

Offsetting means the reduction in Co2 happens somewhere else on the planet.

How does Co2 offsetting help with reducing climate change?

Offsetting Co2 basically means you reduce Co2 somewhere else on the planet. For the planet that is good news as any reduction anywhere will have the same impact.

It is however important to understand that although offsetting is a (great) start, in the end we also need to reduce Co2 emissions ourselves.

What causes climate change?

We want a future without climate change. There is no debate anymore: the key contributor to climate change is too much Co2 emissions. Reducing Co2 emissions will help stopping climate change. We believe that anybody can start reducing Co2 emissions if they are provided the opportunity. We want to make it as easy as possibly for as many as people to start reducing Co2.

About Gricker

Why does Gricker exist?

We want a future without climate change. There is no debate anymore: the key contributor to climate change is too much Co2 emissions. Reducing Co2 emissions will help stopping climate change. We believe that anybody can start reducing Co2 emissions if they are provided the opportunity. We want to make it as easy as possibly for as many as people to start reducing Co2.

Who is behind Gricker?

Gricker is owned and operated by Martin Smit.

Where is Gricker based?

Gricker is based in Zurich, Switzerland. To be more precise, we are based in a little village in Canton Zurich, called Mettmenstetten.

Is Gricker operating Co2 neutral?

Yes, we use renewable energy for ourselves and our services and where we are not certain (or unable) we offset this by purchasing Co2 offsets. You can read more here.

What is a Social Enterprise?

Gricker is a social enterprise. Our primary goal is help to reduce Co2 emissions and to do that we need to get as many people doing this. To reach those many people, and grow, we need investments and to get investments we need to be able to show to potential investors that, somewhere down the road, we may make a profit. We do not anticipate to make a profit in the next 3 to 5 years and even if we do, most of those profits will go directly into Gricker to grow further.

Why is Gricker not a non-profit?

Non-profits are great and we recommend everybody to contribute or participate in one. However, to grow fast and be able to reach out to as many people as possible to Co2 reduction we believe that the social enterprise model will better suit this then the the non-profit model.

What does Gricker do with the profit?

Which profit? We believe we will make no profit the next 3-5 years. Any profit that we will may make will be largely invested to grow further: so we can reach more people and reduce more Co2.

How much of my money is spent on what?

We will spend at least 80% of what you spend on Grickers to purchase offsets from the various Co2 offset providers. The remainder is largely needed to cover the costs (creditcard transaction fees – about 5%, website maintenance, costs for legal advise, insurances, etc.). Since we are a social enterprise we do aim/hope to make a profit but if – or when – we do, we will reinvest almost all of that in allowing us to grow further and reach more people to reduce Co2.

Why is Gricker different then other Co2 offsetting companies?

Gricker is diferent:

  1. We see reducing Co2 emissions as a journey. Co2 offsetting is just a start, our journey also includes reducing Co2 emissions yourself, and switching to renewable energy.
  2. We can virtually guarantee that sufficient Co2 offsetting will take place, due to our unique approach.
  3. We are a transparent social enterprise, based in Switzerland.
